Sustainable Saratoga will host a community gathering on October 14 to discuss its proposed plastic bag ban and other waste-related initiatives going on in the community. The bag ban, which is part of our BYOBag Saratoga initiative to encourage the use of reusable shopping bags, will be presented this fall to City Council. After more than a year of educational initiatives to encourage reusable bags, Sustainable Saratoga believes that the simplest and most effective way to meaningfully reduce plastic bag waste is to ban the single-use, thin film bags given to shoppers as a convenience. Even the most successful educational efforts to reduce waste voluntarily cannot prevent the majority of waste. At the October 14 meeting, BYOBag chairwoman Margie Shepard will discuss BYOBag efforts to date, why we are proposing a bag ban, and how similar bans have been successfully implemented in other communities without harm to the local business community.

The event is free and open to the public. All are welcome!

Location: Empire State College, 2 Union Ave., Room 126

Date: October 14, 7:00PM

Following the Oct. 14 community meeting, on Thursday, Oct. 16 BYOBag Saratoga will be hosting a screening of the documentary Bag It in conjunction with Saratoga Springs City School District’s Parent University. For more information, see the flyer below:
