City Council Postpones Vote on SPA Housing Ordinance

Council will now vote on the ordinance at June 19th meeting

JUNE 7, 2017 – At its meeting yesterday evening, the Saratoga Springs City Council postponed the vote on the “Saratoga Places for All” (SPA) Housing Ordinance, a zoning amendment that would create more diverse and affordable housing options for middle-income families. Commissioner Mathiesen explained that the postponement would allow the Council to respond to a recent letter from the Saratoga County Planning Board, but that the vote would be rescheduled for the upcoming Council meeting on Monday, June 19th at 7:00 p.m. In the meantime, the Council wants to hold yet another workshop to get additional “input” from local bankers and developers.

Clearly, we are disappointed that the City Council did not move forward with adopting the ordinance yesterday, since it represents a significant step forward in addressing the workforce housing crisis that threatens the City’s long-term, sustainable growth. However, we remain hopeful that the Council is committed to taking a multi-faceted approach to increasing workforce housing in Saratoga. Diverse housing opportunities are key to the City’s future, and this is the time to take definitive action.

We would like to thank all the supporters who attended yesterday’s meeting, as well as those who have written or called the City Council to advocate for this legislation. Your continued support is critical in ensuring that we get this ordinance passed. It has been a long road to get to this point, but we are very close to achieving a more inclusive community here in Saratoga Springs.

We look forward to the Council’s decision on June 19th, and we hope you’ll help us keep the pressure on so we can get this ordinance across the finish line.
